Having fun is now cheaper
Dec 06, 2006
The cost of having fun has fallen by 0.6 per cent in the past ten years, according to new research from Egg.
The prices of "fun" leisure and entertainment goods have barely moved over the past decade, as fierce competition between supermarkets and stores has counterbalanced factors such as rising fuel and energy costs.
Some of the largest price falls were seen in areas such as audio-visual equipment like iPods, televisions and sound systems, which fell 10.9 per cent in the past year alone. The price of toys, photographic equipment and sports goods, meanwhile, fell by 4.2 per cent in the past year.
For a few items, prices rose, with the cost of books and newspapers rising 6.4 per cent in the last 12 months, CDs rising 14.4 per cent and tobacco rising 5.7 per cent.
Figures showed, however, that the overall cost of living has soared by nearly a third in the last decade, meaning that some people may consider taking out a secured loan in order to pay for larger costs such as tuition fees or home improvements.
