More women are taking on home improvements
Dec 07, 2006
As many as 70 to 80 per cent of home improvement projects are initiated by women, a spokesperson for DIY giant B&Q has revealed.
B&Q said that increasing numbers of women living on their own were starting to take on home improvement jobs for themselves, making the home improvement market more female-orientated.
In the past, these would have been seen as 'jobs for the boys', but more and more of them were taking on these jobs themselves, they said. DIY was still a very strong market in the UK, they explained, as a lot of people enjoyed doing it and by doing jobs around the home themselves, customers could save a lot of money.
With home improvements being a frequent reason for taking out a personal loan, experts last week indicated that carrying out home improvements could substantially increase the value of a home.
This was particularly true of energy efficiency home improvements, said technical consultant to the National Home Improvement Council, Andrew Leech, who said that sellers whose houses did not meet energy efficiency standards would probably find it more difficult to sell their property when new legislation came in next year.
