Study reveals urban/rural driver divide
Nov 16, 2006
Where you live has a bearing on which car you choose to drive, according to new research.
The poll from AA Personal Loans found that city dwellers were more likely to choose a new car with 'sex appeal', a priority for ten per cent of city dwellers compared to just four per cent of drivers from rural areas.
Despite increased awareness about the environment and urban congestion, city drivers were also more likely to go for a faster and more powerful car than those in rural areas. Drivers living in the countryside were more aware of car running costs, with 30 per cent saying that a car that was cheaper to run and with lower insurance would influence their decision, compared to 19 per cent of city people.
When it came to British regions, where you lived seemed to have an effect on your car choice as well, with 45 per cent of those in the north of Scotland favouring a small family car such as a VW Golf and 17 per cent of those in the north-east opting for a super-mini such as a Renault Clio.
General manager of AA Personal Loans Lloyd East said that a car was one of the most important purchases people made and despite individual taste it was important to consider the best way to finance it. A new car purchase is one of the most popular reasons for taking out a personal loan.
