Environmental worries turn commuters to bikes
Nov 22, 2006
A more environmentally-conscious attitude among consumers as well as concerns over terrorism has caused bike sales to boom, bike insurance firm Cycleguard has claimed.
The Prince of Wales today announced that he would be helping his employees be greener by providing bikes for them when they were travelling short distances around London, so that they did not have to take the car or a taxi.
Bike sales have tripled since the July 7th incidents in 2005, according to Cycleguard, as people invested in new cycles in the wake of the bombings, or to try and fight global warming. People were also raiding their savings or using personal loans to buy increasingly expensive models of bike for their commute, with levels of bike insurance take-up rising accordingly.
A spokesperson for Cycleguard said that the firm had seen a marked increase in the number of people taking out bike insurance, particularly since July 7th. People were spending a bit more on their bikes and accessories so they needed insurance, and household insurance didn't cover everything, the spokesperson added.
