Christmas presents spending to average £351
Nov 30, 2006
Big-spending Britons are set to spend as much as £351 each on presents for their nearest and dearest this Christmas, new research shows.
A study from Mintel found that clothing was set to be the top present for festive shoppers this year, with 73 per cent of them intending to buy this as a gift. This was followed by DVDs and music, books, toiletries and toys.
The shopping is also set to start earlier this year, the research suggested, with only 33 per cent of consumers planning to wait until the last minute. The report concluded that this was partly down to the rise in internet shopping, with consumers having to take last delivery dates into consideration.
A recent study from credit reference agency Callcredit found that the number of Britons who are planning to use credit such as personal loans, overdrafts and credit cards to pay for their Christmas spend dropped to one in ten this year from three in ten last year.
Although the survey found that Britons were planning to spend more this year – with one in ten expected to spend more than £1,000 – they were also found to have better budgeting plans in place with 81 per cent confident that their festive credit spending will be paid off by March.
