Leaving electrical appliances on standby can use as much as 60 per cent of the energy used when the device is switched on, new research finds.
However, the poll from moneysupermarket found that despite being aware that leaving appliances on standby uses energy, over 42 per cent of adults in the UK admit that they always leave them on standby or don't switch them off at the wall socket.
Consumers seem to be apathetic about saving energy and think that it is not up to them to take action, with 72 per cent of respondents believing that manufacturers should be responsible for supplying energy-efficient products to the consumer. A spokesman from moneysupermarket said that the nation needed to take responsibility for saving energy in order to help the environment, by switching off appliances fully and maybe considering swapping to a green energy supplier.
With home improvements among the most popular reasons for taking out a personal loan, the company advises steps such as buying a lagging jacket for the hot water tank, insulating pipes, loft insulation and cavity wall insulation as good ways of saving energy.
