Britons afraid to talk about money
Oct 27, 2006
While over half of Britons are happy to talk about their love life with their best friends, most of them are just not happy discussing debt and money problems, first direct claims.
A new study from the bank found that money troubles were one of the last taboo subjects between groups of friends, with less than a quarter of adults happy to discuss them with their best friends. However 53 per cent of people would talk to their friends about their love life or family issues, while 40 per cent would talk about worries regarding their health or their career.
The survey, which was conducted by Future Foundation for first direct, also found a clear divide between attitudes to money in the north of England and the capital. People from the north of England were least comfortable discussing money with family and friends and most comfortable discussing their love lives or career, while Londoners were the opposite – most comfortable talking about money and least talking about family problems.
Television relationship psychologist Mo Shapiro said that while admitting to money problems could feel like admitting to failing to run your life properly for some people, just discussing debt worries could make them seem less frightening.
