Home improvers warned to play by the rules
Oct 30, 2006
Home improvements are one of the most common reasons for taking out a personal loan and more than a third of Britons are planning to upgrade their home in 2007, research from Halifax reveals.
However, the company warned enthusiastic DIY-ers to make sure they followed all the correct procedures when planning a project, or they could come to regret it. Among the things that homeowners should check is whether they will need planning permission for conservatories added to the back of their home, with porches and conservatories built at ground level and measuring less than 30 metres squared usually exempt from building regulations.
Other things to watch out for include whether jobs such as loft conversions, boiler installation and window replacements comply with building regulations. People should also be careful about undertaking any electrical work, as this is now subject to more stringent regulation. The head of mortgages at Halifax said that while home improvement projects could be exciting and it was easy to get carried away, if people did not pay attention to regulations, it could come back to haunt them.
The company has launched a new website which provides those planning home improvements with information and advice to help them organise their projects.
