Drivers prepared to consider green car purchase
Oct 30, 2006
Around 97 per cent of UK drivers say that they would consider buying a more environmentally-friendly car in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
However, 73 per cent of the motorists surveyed by insurer swiftcover.com said that they would only buy one if they were cheaper to buy. Meanwhile, 70 per cent said that they would only buy a green car if they were cheaper to run than their present car.
Andrew Blowers of swiftcover.com said that the results of the poll showed that an effective way to cut emissions would be for the government to work with fuel suppliers and car manufacturers in order to reduce the cost of environmentally-friendly cars. Britons are planning to spend £69.4 billion on new and used cars in the next six months, research from Sainsbury's Bank found, with many drivers planning to fund at least part of their purchase with a personal loan.
The poll from swiftcover.com revealed that drivers were even less willing to help the environment by cutting down on their car use. More than half of drivers (57 per cent) said that they would not cut down on their journeys even if petrol prices doubled.
