Britons looking to do it themselves
Oct 10, 2006
Annual spending on DIY in the UK has increased by 76 per cent over the past ten years, research from Halifax has shown.
Britons are moving away from tradesmen and are increasingly doing-it-themselves, now spending £11.3 billion on DIY, double the amount spent on trades and services.
Carrying out home improvements is one of the most popular reasons for taking out a personal loan and people are spending more and more on DIY, with spending on tools increasing by 126 per cent over the past decade and spending on DIY materials rising 56 per cent.
With spending on DIY continuing to increase, it's clear that and more people are looking to carry out work themselves rather than pay for outside help. The Halifax has launched a new website with DIY tips to help eager home-improvers to manage their projects, including advice on aspects such as preparation and planning.
