Car repair industry misses code of practice deadline
Oct 18, 2006
The car repair industry has missed the deadline for implementing a new code of practice laid down by the National Consumer Council (NCC), it has emerged. With last month's release of the new '56' number plate, many drivers will be heading out to buy new cars, some of them using personal loans and other types of finance to pay for them. Despite the recent rises in the bank of England base rate, interest rates on personal loans have remained relatively stable.
However, research from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) found that drivers could be being ripped off by unscrupulous trades people to the tune of £4 billion each year for car repairs, leading the NCC to call for a new code of practice. The NCC gave the car servicing industry a timetable and plan of action to improve the industry for consumers six months ago, including new quality standards, with the first deadline at the weekend.
Senior policy advocate at the NCC said that although there was frustration that the deadline had not been met, significant progress had been made and many of the more difficult issues had been resolved. The organisation said that it will be meeting with the DTI and the Office of Fair Trading to make sure that progress is maintained on the matter.
