Football mania can cost £100k
Oct 02, 2006
Hardcore football fans will spend almost £100,000 following their team over the course of their lives, according to new research.
Virgin Money's Football Fans Inflation Index revealed that the hardcore fan who travels overseas will spend nearly £20,000 on season tickets, a further £11,600 on tickets for away games and club matches and £40,000 on travel over a lifetime.
Even an ardent fan, who pays for season tickets and club merchandise but not trips abroad, would spend more than £68,000 in their lifetime.
Meanwhile, an armchair fan who would sign up to TV sports packages and subscribe to a magazine, would pay out £14,716 over the course of their life. Virgin Money spokesman Scott Mowbray suggested the prospect of spending up to £100,000 just to support your team is particularly daunting for most young people who are desperate to find the money but may be struggling with existing debts.
An attendance drop in this year's Premiership could be a symptom of the top tier pricing its fans out of the grounds. Inflationary costs for football fans is rising, the report reveals, and with prices for consumer goods such as furniture and furnishings also rising, some consumers may choose to take out a personal loan to cover costs.
