Home improvement guide to target cowboy builders
Oct 13, 2006
A new guide will make it easier for homeowners to estimate costs when they are planning home improvements.
The Property Makeover Guide from the Building Cost Information Service (BCIS) at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors contains information on what homeowners should expect to pay contractors for a range of different types of work.
Among the 1,300 different kinds of work included in the guide are replacing chimney pots, fixing window panes and putting in a loft conversion, while figures are adjusted for a range of locations, as prices vary between regions. The guide is designed to help homeowners judge what is a fair price for home improvements and also includes information on how to budget.
A BCIS spokesman said that he hoped the guide would help to demystify construction and help to drive cowboy builders out of town. It was the first time this kind of information had been made available to the public, he added. Home improvements are among the most popular reasons for borrowers to take out a personal loan.
