Home improvement warning to homeowners
Oct 19, 2006
Homeowners have been warned about employing unscrupulous trades people to carry out home improvements.
Many people use personal loans to fund home improvements and research from Direct Line Home Insurance found that over 35 per cent of Britons have employed someone to carry out home improvements in the past two years. But despite paying out an average of £7,340 each for these home improvements, seven per cent were unhappy about the completed work, with more than £8 billion wasted on botched jobs overall, while 11 per cent had to bring someone else in to sort out the problem.
More than half (58 per cent) of the 15 million homeowners who paid for cash-in-hand work were not aware that cash payers had the same rights as those paying by other methods, despite paying a collective £31 billion for this type of work. A spokesperson for Direct Line Home Insurance said that homeowners need to be aware of their rights when it comes to employing trades people and ensure that in the event that problems occur, they will be rectified quickly. The best approach is to hire a trades person from an approved network, ask for and follow up references and always ensure that you ask for proof of the work carried out - either a receipt or a written guarantee.
