Householders warned against flooding damage
Oct 01, 2006
Householders have been urged to carry out some emergency home improvements and repairs in preparation for high tides and storms expected in the next few weeks. Simple precautions can minimise flooding damage to houses, said the Liverpool Victoria friendly society, and with climate change making severe weather increasingly common, householders should be prepared for such events as a matter of course.
The insurer has compiled a checklist of measures homeowners can take to minimise flooding damage to their property, which may help them to avoid costly repairs.
Loose roof tiles should be repaired or replaced, it said, while windows and doors should have effective seals put on them if they are not present already. Meanwhile, homeowners should check drain grilles and gutters to make sure they are clear and draining properly, as well as securing or putting away loose items that may blow around the garden.
If the property is in imminent danger of flooding, valuables, personal documents and loose rugs should be put out of harm's way, the society said, while basements should be emptied and furniture moved to the first floor, or stacked off the floor.
People in the UK should also consider their cars, the society warned, as driving through deep water can potentially ruin a vehicle. Carrying out home improvements or financing a new car are among the most popular reasons for many people to take out a personal loan.
