Identity fraud at record levels
Oct 23, 2006
The number of identity fraud victims has reached record levels in 2006, new figures show.
Figures from Cifas, the UK's fraud prevention service, revealed that the number of identity fraud cases in the first three quarters of 2006 was 21 per cent higher than in the first three quarters of 2005. Identity fraudsters steal personal information in order to take out forms of credit such as loans and credit cards in the victim's name. This can damage a consumer's credit rating, and can make it difficult for them to apply for mortgages and remortgages in the future.
Internet bank Smile says that it is important for consumers to take precautions to help them to avoid becoming victims of fraudsters. Among the steps recommended by the bank are that consumers should regularly check financial statements for anything strange, as well as destroying personal documents such as bank statements and bills in a shredder.
Other steps include protecting login details, cards and security information, checking their credit file for accuracy, keeping important documents safe and remembering to get mail redirected when they move house.
