Parents chip in for DIY
Oct 18, 2006
Young Britons are calling on parents to help them with DIY activities rather than actually doing it themselves, a new survey has revealed.
Nearly two-thirds of the British adults polled by Halifax admitted that they had asked their parents to help them out of a DIY fix, with parents donating an average of eight days worth of free DIY to their offspring in the last five years.
With home improvements one of the most popular reasons for taking out a personal loan, 30 per cent of those surveyed said that they had asked parents for help in order to avoid the costs of hiring a trades person, while 36 per cent said they had asked their parents because they didn't have time to do it themselves.
Almost half of Britons, meanwhile, said they had asked their parents for DIY help because they didn't have the skills to do it themselves, with only 31 per cent of 18 to 35-year-olds rating their DIY skills and knowledge as being better than their parents', compared to 63 per cent of over 55-year-olds. A Senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance said that it would be great to see more younger people taking an interest in DIY as their parents would not be able to help them out forever. Even small cosmetic tasks could add value to a property, he said.
