Parents 'spend hundreds to make cars child-friendly'
Oct 17, 2006
Parents are splashing out hundreds of pounds on toys and high-tech gadgets to make their cars more child-friendly, according to a new report.
Research from Zurich Insurance found that 91 per cent of mums and dads were spending up to £500 on child-related accessories for cars, with 82 per cent spending on baby-seats, 67 per cent on sun-screens and 41 per cent on car toys.
Around two-thirds of parents (67 per cent) of three to 11-year-olds were found to be forking out up to £300 on high tech equipment to amuse the children, with 27 per cent buying hand-held games and 18 per cent installing headrest DVD players.
The main reasons for the spending seemed to be parents' belief that an entertained child was a happy child (57 per cent), with 42 per cent saying that children in the back of the car could be a distraction when driving.
Becoming a parent was also found to be a major reason for buying a new car, with 28 per cent of parents with children under the age of three choosing to upgrade to a more child-friendly model, costing an average of £7,786, some of whom may have used a personal loan to fund their purchase.
