School run parents reliant on cars
Oct 20, 2006
School run parents say they couldn't give up their car, a new survey reveals.
The poll from insurers swiftcover.com found that around 4.5 million drivers take their children to school by car at least once or twice a week, with three million doing it daily. However, despite government initiatives to encourage greater use of public transport for the school run, almost 90 per cent of drivers say that they couldn't make the journey on public transport even if they wanted to.
Men were more unwilling to give up their car for the school journey than women, with 95 per cent of men saying they couldn't use public transport compared to 90 per cent of women. Despite the large range of public transport options available in London, ten per cent of drivers still chose to drive their children to school at least once a week. Another reason for people choosing to do the school run by car was because they enjoyed the creature comforts of their vehicle, the survey found, with three in four drivers saying they were more comfortable travelling in their cars than by bus or train.
Some drivers may choose a personal loan to finance a new car for the school run, with research from Halifax showing that 21 per cent of unsecured personal loans are for new or second-hand cars.
