The cost of children's parties: £450
Oct 10, 2006
British families are spending nearly £450 a year on average to celebrate children's birthdays, new research has found.
Parents are shelling out an average of £87 on things such as food and entertainers to make sure their own child's first birthday party is just right, plus a further £84 on birthday presents.
Around one in ten adults are spending as much as £150 on their child's first party, while for most adults there is the added expense of taking their child to other children's parties, costing around £49 per year.
For the average family with two children, this adds up to a massive £450 per year and with the recent rise in energy bills plus August's interest rates rise on top of it, it is unsurprising that many adults are taking out personal loans in order to pay for larger costs like a new car.
While two-thirds of parents said that they threw lavish birthday parties because they felt that their child deserved them, there was also an element of keeping up with the Joneses, with one in ten parents saying they threw great parties to impress friends or other children's parents
