Wealthiest street names revealed
Oct 26, 2006
The name of the street a person lives on can indicate their social class, researchers have found.
Researchers from University College London analysed more than 700,000 British road names and found that some street names were more affluent than others. People were more likely to be affluent if their house was on a Way, a Wood or a Common, while those with a house on a Street, Crescent or a Terrace were likely to be less well off. When it came to the beginnings of street names, those starting with words like Badger, Copse and Firs were more likely to be well-to-do.
The study' leader told the Times that while in Victorian times streets were more likely to be named after politicians or military figures, today it was usually only local authorities that did so. The fashion now was for developers to name streets after birds, which tended to sell houses better, he said. Homeowners may choose to release some of the capital from their home by remortgaging.
