Annual spending on DIY in the UK has increased by 76 per cent over the past ten years, research from a high street bank has shown.
With Britons moving away from tradesmen and increasingly doing-it-themselves, they are now spending £11.3 billion on DIY, double the amount spent on trades and services. Carrying out home improvements is one of the most popular reasons for taking out a personal loan and people are spending more and more on DIY, with spending on tools increasing by 126 per cent over the past decade and spending on DIY materials rising 56 per cent.
Spending on DIY is expected to continue to increase with more people looking to do the work themselves rather than calling in a tradesman. Various websites with DIY tips to help eager home-improvers to manage their projects are appearing, with many offering advice on aspects such as finance, preparation and design.
