Midlands is CCJ hotspot
Sep 22, 2006
Where a person lives can reveal how likely they are to receive a County Court Judgement (CCJ), new research suggests.
A study from credit report service MyCallcredit found that between May 2005 and May 2006, Purfleet in Essex recorded the highest number of CCJs per head six for every 100 adults, compared to a national average of two per 100 adults.
CCJs are court orders ruling that the recipient must repay a debt that they owe and are often issued to people in problem debt who are not making repayments. They can often make it more difficult to get credit such as loans or credit cards in the future.
More than three quarters of a million CCJs were registered in England and Wales in the year ending May 2006, the research found, although 55 per cent of the population live in areas where no CCJs were recorded in the last 12 months. Around 15 per cent of the population live in areas where three or more CCJs per head were recorded in the past year.
Callcredit director Mel Mitchley said: "A combination of record levels of personal debt combined with the recent interest rate rise could mean that over the next year we start to see CCJs in neighbourhoods that have so far been unaffected."
Of the 20 towns with the worst record for CCJs, eight were in the Midlands, while four were in the east and three were in the London and the Yorkshire and Humber regions.
